Weekly Torah Study – May 27th

 Nafshenu Torah study: Parashat B’ha-a lot’kha/בהעלתך

Jewish feminists scouring the Bible for precedents uplift Miriam as a bold leader of her people. After all, she saves her little brother Moses from death and helps him find an adoptive home in Pharaoh’s court. She leads the women in song after the Israelites evade attacking Egyptian chariots and cross the sea. But when Miriam and brother Aaron question Moses’ leadership – “Has YAH only spoken through Moses? Has he not also spoken through us? (Numbers 12:2) – God strikes her with a skin disease but lets Aaron off the hook. What are we to make of the silencing of Torah’s biggest heroine?
